1. RM Training:  A Needs Assessment Tool

RM Training ToolHow do you design and deliver the right records management training program?

Training and development professionals recognize that the key is to start with a needs assessment.

When you start with the broader objectives of the organization and then identify the performance goals that will support those objectives, you set a solid foundation for developing effective training content and delivery methods.

This tool provides a starting point for cutting through the complications and contradictions that cloud your organization’s training objectives, putting you well on the road to addressing records management challenges, big and small.

We’ll cover:

• Determining organizational objectives
• Identifying who should participate
• What content you’ll need for different participants
• What training methods to use

2. Highlights from Our Year End Survey

Our Year End Survey had the best response from our readers to date, so many thanks to all who participated!

We asked you to tell us what was ahead for you in 2010.  Here are some of the highlights:

2010 RM Priorities:  Top 3

The top priorities for our readers and their RM programs are as follows (in order):

• Records retention and retention schedules
• Electronic content management
• Staff training and development

Interestingly, records classification was a close fourth.  So what does that tell us?  These results confirm from both the increasing volume of information that organizations are handling, and the increasingly important role RM plays in doing so.

The more information there is, the greater the need to efficiently organize and retain it.  As new formats (i.e.: electronic) are added to the mix, the ability to incorporate those new formats into the overall RM program becomes crucial.  And as the consequences of mishandling information become increasingly severe, the greater the need to effectively educate staff on RM best practices.

The Budget Picture Stabilizes

2010 RM Budget Expectations

The good news is that RM budgets seem to be stabilizing as compared to the same time least year.  While 38% of our respondents indicated that their budgets were being reduced, almost 50% percent reported no change for 2010 while an incredible 12% actually reported budget increases.

While it is too early to say that the worst in RM budget cuts is over, it certainly looks as though there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Again, as companies continue to recognize how vitally important it is for success in the information age, so to should budget stabilization.

Where is the Money Going?

While the largest portion of our readers budgets still go to filing supplies, our results showed some interesting gaps between reported priorities and spending.

For instance, even though getting retention and classification right is obviously a big priority for the coming year, our respondents don’t anticipate significant spending  on related consulting services.

On the other hand, anticipated spending on both offsite storage and shredding has increased dramatically, although neither were identified as priorities.

We Hear You

We also had some really good feedback on what our readers want us to cover next year.  Obviously retention, training and classification topped the list, but we also had some great suggestions on knowledge sharing between RM professionals and further environmental RM coverage.

We’ll do our best to get to it all in 2010.  Thanks again to all who responded!
